PlayStation Is Ending Physical Game Discs—and OG Gamers Aren’t Ready

On July 1, 2026, PlayStation Blog announced that physical-disc production for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will end in January 2028. New releases after that point will be offered digitally, moving gaming another step away from the cartridges, discs, cases, and collections many of us grew up with.

For any gamer over 35, physical games were never just a way to load something onto a console. They were proof that you were a gamer.

Your cartridges, game discs, PC boxes, strategy guides, memory cards, and controllers were displayed. The bigger the collection, the more impressive it looked. Friends walked into your room, checked the shelves, and knew whether you occasionally played or took gaming seriously.

Before achievements, gamer scores, rare skins, and digital profiles, your collection was your gaming résumé.

Every game had a story. Some were birthday gifts. Others required months of saving, trades with friends, or serious negotiations with your parents. You opened the case, admired the disc, flipped through the instruction manual, and protected it from scratches like it contained classified information.

You owned it. You could hold it and display it like a badge of honor. You spent hours grinding to win, overcoming brutal levels without walkthrough videos, online guides, or modern shortcuts. Long before “sweat” became gaming slang, you were putting in the time and refusing to quit.

Gaming has changed, but OG gamers never left. We downloaded patches, entered online lobbies, learned new systems, and kept chasing wins—even with jobs, families, responsibilities, and reaction times that require a warm-up round.
